Third Place materials board

My third place project was based on a Moroccan themed cafe. The rendered plan and perspective was new for me and really give your ideas a better sense of completeness. They were challenging for me but I am excited to improve and keep practicing them. I figured out a better final logo that works for me as well. I really enjoyed every one in the classes third place project. Everyone has improved so much and has really great ideas. I learned a lot from this project, mostly with perspective drawings and grasping a better sense of scale when drawing a perspective.

Rendered Perspective for third place space

3rd place space projects rendered perspective was difficult for me. I find it hard to draw what I am actually thinking or visioning since this type of stuff is still kind of new to me. The scalee people add great detail and sense of scale to the perspective that I think are very effective. I need a lot of practice to be able to capture the great designs I have in mind.

WEEK:10 Cafe

I picture my cafe on the beach somewhere with a modern and clean look. I want wood beam ceilings, blue stained concrete floors, a nice back sitting area right on the beach, open and breezy. Mahi-mahi is my favorite fish and I think it is a beautiful fish. I want my accent colors to be the color of mahi-mahi. I want lots of natural lighting and a open and breezy inside feel as well.

WEEK 10: Logo Sketches

The class is designing future desired design firm logo's. Right now we only have rough idea sketches. Some of them completely different ideas. I would like to design predominantly near the water, beaches, etc. So my some of mine refer to this desire. I also like very natural elements so included 2 of my favorite natural objects to be incorporated in my logos. I still have lots of altering and adjustments I wish to make to these logos to make them more successful, but I feel like I gave myself a good start. I did a lot of playing around with the letter "D" considering its my first and last initial and my profession, "designer." Danziner is an upcoming nickname my friends are giving me sometimes because I am always at school and designing.

WEEK 8: Furniture to Floorplans

Last week we focused on drawing/drafting correct and actual floorplans. We scaled them down and got really technical. This week we added furniture and closets and whatever else was necessary. There are certain stencils you can buy and use for floorplans that come with most furniture and already scaled objects you would draw in a floorplan space. I tried mine without a stencil and worked on getting the scale as actual as possible. I plan on getting a stencil soon because it can save time and give you a better and more precise outcome on a floorplan. I got to learn different types of doors you can draw for closets and entryways. I never knew what the dashed lines were that you see in closets or over countertops and now I know that they represent something higher in the space that are not below you drawn cut line. I like how official these floorplans look. I see that for next time however, I should use a straight edge for everything, the free handed dimension lines outside the floorplans do not look good, especially drawn next to a drafted floorplan.

WEEK 7: Floorplans

Floorplans are not my favorite types of drawings. They are colorless, boring, and are too actual to add your own style. They are very important though and I enjoy learning how to do them. They are lots of rules and regulations that go into these drawings, and many symbols that you need to learn and practice. I enjoy working with scale, it makes me feel more official. I'm excited to learn how to add furniture and stuff to my floorplans.

WEEK 7: Rendered shapes with shadows, and living space

The class has still been practicing rendered drawings working with shadows and lighting. In order to create this effect as best as possible, we need to blend different color markers and colored pencils as well. The clear blender marker all though not as effective on bond paper helps to blend these markers. Being limited on the amount of colors I have, I have to think and harder and spend more time playing around with blender colors on a scratch piece of paper to get the right hues and tones. These rendered drawings are still so much harder than they look, it almost looks like an elementary school kid drew this. The markers are sometimes tricky staying inside the lines due to the variety of tips on the markers. With the living space rendered drawings you are given a little more freedom. You can play around with patterns and other marker techniques. However with the objects being real you need to think of good ways to create correct textures and patterns that would suffice the space. When lighting and shadows come into play in a real living space its harder to think about how to make them look realistic. You need to study real spaces and their lighting. I really enjoy experimenting with techniques to create realistic surfaces such as wood, metal, leather, etc.

WEEK 6: Multiview Worksheet

These multiview practice drawings were very challenging. I am not even sure if some of these are close to being right. This worksheet was like a mind game to me, I had multiple attempts for each example til I discovered a cube that made some what sense. I think these drawings are very good for the mind, and the class should continue to challenge themselves with these. I could not really determine what was wrong with number 3, because I found that a few of my drawings did not match up. I think in these drawings there is supposed to be some subtractive space, however it is hard for me to see what space should be taken away.

WEEK 6: Still Life with Shadows

Now that everyone has been getting more familiar with contour and value drawings, we through shadows and lighting into the mix. Shadows are not very hard to see where they go and how to use them, but rather harder when actually going to find the right color and weight and technique to draw it. It was a lot harder than it looked and even if the shadows drawn are not very good they still help in defining light sources and making a drawing look more realistic. Shadowing can be very helpful to our rendered drawings for this major. When presenting an idea to a client, it is nice to be able to point out where the light sources are, and how things will be placed in a space due to lighting, as well as how things might look when light is shining on them. I thought that the class as a whole will need more practice on shadows, it is a difficult concept to capture in a drawing effectively, and it is important to have correct shadowing.

WEEK 5: First Place Space Rendering

This view of my house was a little challenging for me, the angles and multiple view points were tricky. I had been wanting to attempt a sketch of this spot for a while. I am pleased with the way it turned out. The coloring does not do it justice, but it adds a nice touch. I learned how to use the blender marker a little bit better, so I can some improvement with my week 5 drawings. I still need to work on my marker streakiness, that is my least favorite part of the drawing.

WEEK 5: First Rendering (prismacolor experimenting)

The class was given a pre-drawn contour of a space, and we were asked to render this drawing with, prismacolor colored pencils, and prismacolor or chartpak markers. This assignment was more difficult than I was expecting. It takes a while to build up a solid color base of markers. So my color palette was limited. There are also so many things that can be done with these markers and it was hard for me to get the hang of them. I was not sure how to use the blender marker, the marker would have made these drawings look significantly better. But overall I love working with color and these markers can do so much. I think once I get the hang of these renderings this will be my favorite part about this class.

WEEK 4: Atrium Perspective (scanned and photographed)

The perspective drawings of the atrium were very confusing to me at first. For the first hour of this assignment I sat in the atrium just staring at its boundaries just trying to figure out a starting point. It looked at a lot easier than it actually was for me. I chose multiple spots around the atrium trying to figure out the spot that would work for me. I had many troubles, when the sketches had multiple vantage points I got lost in the drawing. When I started to add people it was difficult to get the proportions. Selective drawing was a struggle for me too, it was hard for me to decide what to and what not to draw. After I completed the drawing I was pleased. I was not the best at drawing before this class but this assignment helped a lot and helped me see things differently in order to create the best sketch. I did not think I would be able to pull something off this good.

WEEK 4: Perspective Practice

Perspectives are one of my favorite types of drawings when I start to understand how they work. We have been working a lot on perspectives, they are one of the most important skills in interior design. They are confusing and tough at first. But they are almost like a set of rules and start to get very easy once you understand the rules. These were some random quick sketches to practice. Perspective drawings become easier for me when I capture as much of the room as possible. With these sketches I tried some selective drawings to practice perspectives of single furniture pieces. In doing so I discovered I need a lot of practice with that. I was not pleased with any of these sketches. I need to practice seeing and sketching furniture pieces standing alone.

WEEK 4: figure drawings

I am the worst when it comes to drawing proportional and correct human figures. We spent some time this week on improving and learning quick tips on how to draw to figures. I did not think that the even reaching this point in figure drawing was something that I could achieve. I am very impressed with myself.

WEEK 3: Household contours and value sketches

I really liked this assignment. I was not familiar with drawing and sketching values, so to do an exercise focusing on that was challenging and fun. I really liked how they turned out. I definitely took a valued skill out of this exercise. I honestly think this is an example of some of my best sketching ever. I did not want to take the easy way out on this one, I chose a very textured and detailed set up to sketch and had fun with it. I also hated contour drawings until I did this one. I think these contours still capture a beautiful image.

WEEK 3: One Point Perspectives of Work Space

This perspective drawing has since been modified after posting. This was a perspective drawing of my desk area in class. I think that it was a very good area to learn the basics and start with perspectives. I chose to do a one point (single vantage point) perspective, because I felt it was appropriate for this space. The light fixtures on the ceiling were the hardest for me, as well as the stool considering it was attempting drawing curves in perspective. I really like perspective drawing, I have never been the pest at drawing and perspectives give me a sense of cheating at drawing to make them look more realistic. I can not wait to do more perspectives.

WEEK 3: NAME IT Contours

Week 3 we still practiced some contour drawings. This time we contoured our NAME IT projects from week 1. I do not feel that I had a very good NAME IT project to draw. The mug was too simple, and hard to draw since it was glass and there was a lot of different lighting. The music note pieces was very hairy and piecey to draw. I had a difficult time trying to draw it.

WEEK 2: Still life sketches

We were required to set up a still life and practice sketching it with different angles and views. I chose my bed considering it had many tones and free flowing lines. I also discovered I should practice these types of organic free flowing lines more. It was difficult and does not look good. So I added a orthogonal sketch of stacked furniture pieces in my room to see how the light hits the inside and work with a sense of distance. I now know I need to practice my curved line sketches. However, I am pretty pleased with my values and tones in these sketches. I have never really practiced or tried sketching with value and tone, and I like how it looks and I do not think I did that bad for a first pass.

WEEK 2: Handmade Viewfinder

These are the front and back images of my handmade viewfinder. These viewfinders make sketches more precise. I found it significantly helpful when trying to get the right distances and proportions.

In class practice sketches

The class gathered and practiced various sketches with different lines and shading techniques using our handmade viewfinders. This helped with the practice of proportions, and distance.

WEEK 2: Contour Practice

This week the class was exploring the contour technique to drawing. There are several ways to experiment with contour sketches. This spread I tried regular contour which is just the outline sketch of something. Modified contour gets a little harder, it is the same as contour however you mostly look at the object being sketched and only glancing at your paper. Blind contour however is strictly looking at the object and surprising yourself with whatever it looks like at the end. This assignment made me feel a little dumb. But for interior design I can see how this technique might come in handy. Maybe with a client you are examining a space and quickly sketching the desired product. It can be very impressive the more you practice.
